Review - Gangster Squad

Director: Ruben Fleischer
Running Time: 113 minutes
Review by Tom Clift

Zombieland director Ruben Fleischer takes a break from comedy with Gangster Squad, a forties set crime film about a crack team of cops waging an off-the-books battle against LA’s most dangerous mob boss. Armed with slick production values and a cast that goes for miles – including Josh Brolin, Ryan Gosling, Sean Penn and Emma Stone – it’s a shallow and fairly preposterous confection, one that’s far too glossy to be film noir or even pulp fiction. But plenty of action and a few stand-out performances guarantee it’s a fun ride while it lasts.
